HOW DOES TEETH WHITENING WORK?
Many people today are using teeth whitening procedures to improve the brightness and attractiveness of their smile. If you have been considering tooth whitening but aren’t sure if it’s right for you, please read on because we are going to provide you with the all of the comprehensive information you need to make an informed decision about Teeth Whitening.
Over time, things such as smoking, coffee, red wine and other food and drinks can stain and darken tooth enamel. Teeth whitening is a process in which the colour of your tooth enamel is restored to its original brightness. In just under an hour, years of stain and discolouration can be removed so that you can achieve a brighter, more attractive smile.
Teeth whitening is effective regardless of whether your teeth are currently off-white, yellow, or even dark brown. Through a simple, painless procedure, our highly-skilled Sydney dentists can restore your smile.
During the process, products containing peroxide are used to dissolve the build-up or organic stains that can form on teeth over time, restoring your teeth to their original brightness. The peroxide comes in two forms Carbamide peroxide and also Hydrogen peroxide.
THE TEETH WHITENING PROCESS IN SYDNEY
When you visit the Sydney Dentist Clinic, your dentist will check your teeth to determine whether teeth whitening is a viable option for you.
Not everyone is considered to be a good candidate for teeth whitening because there are minor risk associated with any dental procedure, especially if you currently have advanced tooth decay or have had extensive dental work done in the past. If your dentist clears you for the procedure after examining your teeth, you will be provided with a recommendation for the best option for you.
There are two common alternatives:
- In-office teeth whitening session
- Take-home teeth whitening kit
IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING
One of the fastest and most effective teeth whitening procedures is our in-office teeth whitening. It only takes about an hour, yet we can remove years of built-up stains and discolouration and make your teeth up to 12 shades whiter.
This is done by applying prescription formula whitening gel to your teeth. Once applied, an ultra-violet (UV) lamp is used to activate the whitening effects of this compound. The process is then repeated two to three times, depending on the whitening goals set by your dentist and the initial results.
Many of our patients choose this option because it is fast, effective, performed by a professional and doesn’t require any work on their part.
TAKE-HOME TEETH WHITENING KITS
A second option is to skip the office session altogether and simply use a professional take-home teeth whitening kit to achieve the same results. These kits tend to be less expensive than an in-office teeth whitening session because you will perform most of the work on your own. But this also means that you will be responsible for any damage incurred during the process and must wait a few weeks to see the full results.
In most cases, patients who opt for the take-home teeth whitening will receive a customized mouth tray that will assist in the application of a reduced strength whitening gel (lower CP or HP). This is to ensure your own safety at home.
Typically, you will have to wear the tray during the day or overnight and reapply the gel regularly for a few weeks at a time. If you follow the instructions explicitly, over time you can achieve the same end results as an in-office Sydney teeth whitening session.
RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH TEETH WHITENING
In most cases, teeth whitening is a safe an effective way to brighten your smile, especially when you are examined beforehand by a dentist from the Sydney Dentist Clinic. Occasionally, however, there may be side effects – sometimes serious – that can be caused by choosing the wrong method, applying the take-home teeth whitening gel incorrectly, or using it for too long or too often.
